On the plantation island of Lanai, what began with one Bible study and one faithful woman became a lasting testimony of God’s providence. When the island was owned by Dole Pineapple Company, a small group of believers prayed for guidance—and God opened the door in an unexpected way, even providing land for a church to be built.

Our story

More than 80 years ago, on the plantation island of Lanai, a faithful colporteur stepped ashore only to be forced to leave three days later. At the time, the island was owned by Dole Pineapple Company, and there was no place for a new church to begin.

But before he left, he enrolled one woman (Winnie Basques)in the Voice of Prophecy Bible course.

That single decision changed everything.

In 1953, Winnie wrote to the conference office asking for someone to teach them how to keep the Sabbath. A pastor came. An evangelistic series began without permission. On the third night, he was summoned to the plantation manager’s office, expecting to be expelled from the island. Instead, something remarkable happened.

The manager welcomed him.

Not only did he offer support, but he leased one of the best pieces of property in town for one dollar a year and made plantation homes available for purchase so a church could be built. When asked why, he explained that his mother had once been cared for at Washington Adventist Sanatorium, and he saw this as his opportunity to say thank you.

No one asked for land. No one negotiated terms. God simply opened the door.

Today, that church still stands, a testimony to providence, perseverance, and a deep love for the people of Lanai. What began with two members has grown into a thriving congregation of 20–30 faithful believers. With that growth comes a new need.

The current parsonage home to the pastor, visiting volunteers, and the children’s Sabbath School has been stretched beyond capacity. The ministry is expanding, but the physical space is not.

This fundraiser will help expand the footprint of the parsonage so the church can continue serving the island effectively hosting volunteers, discipling families, and nurturing the next generation in faith.

Just as God moved hearts decades ago to establish this church, we believe He is moving hearts again today.

Would you prayerfully consider partnering in this next chapter? Your financial gift will directly support the construction and expansion of a space that serves as the heart of ministry on Lanai.
