"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." - 2 Peter 4:10
Christman’s parents sailed to Hawaii shortly after World War II. His father pastored the Kaimuki church — today called Diamond Head; he later served as a departmental director in what was then called the Hawaii Mission.
Christman’s parents were later called to serve as missionaries in Brazil. Gerry was born there three months after they arrived. “Elementary math,” says Christman, “tells me I was manufactured in Hawaii and assembled else- where.” Christman spent his first nine years in Brazil. His family then moved to Peru, where they continued their mission service.
After graduating from what is now known as Southwestern Adventist University, Christman attended Andrews University where he earned a Master of Divinity degree and, later, a Doctor of Ministry. Christman, also, holds a Master of Science in Public Health from Loma Linda University.
Ellen (Clark), his wife, is an active partner in his ministry. She was an elementary teacher in Pensacola, Fla., when Gerry first met her through Adventist Contact, a computer dating service. Gerry was pastoring in Louisiana when the two were married. Not long after, the couple was called to Brazil for mission service. After serving in south Brazil for four years as a conference department director, they moved to Northeast Brazil College where Gerry taught theology before becoming its president.
Next, they moved to Chile. Christman began and directed a Master of Public Health program at Chile Adventist University. His students were pastors and teachers throughout many South American countries. Prior to coming to Hawaii in 2010, the Christmans spent more than 10 years in Weslaco, Texas. Christman was senior pastor of the campus church for Valley Grande Adventist Academy, a church that served both the academy and the community.
The Christmans have two children: Julie, a pastor's wife in Vermont, and Kevin, a mechanical engineer in Texas.
The Hawaii Conference is indeed grateful to God for the leadership and ministry Gerry Christman will provide as conference secretary.
